Great Work And Many Thanks!

Great work and many thanks to all who participated in the Wavecrest work day yesterday. The Junior Land Stewards plots are looking great, and have been sheet mulched to prevent future weeds, and to retain critical moisture during these dry months. It was a beautiful day, with a mixture of familiar and new faces, including a trio of young girls (one birthday girl in a rainbow tutu who turned three). If you missed out this time, please plan to join us on July 16, as we return to Wavecrest to do more good work.

Thank you to Barbara Dye and Sara Polgar for all these great photos.

Thank you so MULCH!

Great thanks to Todd Seeley and the City of Half Moon Bay public works department, and also the Half Moon Bay Soil Farm for providing and delivering mulch to the Junior Land Stewards garden plots in preparation for our Wavecrest work day next Saturday, May 21. This was no small feat, and we thank you all for this good work.

Don’t forget to join us on the coastal prairie for a habitat restoration workday at Wavecrest Open Space on Saturday, May 21 from 10:00am- 12:00pm PDT. We are excited to be back in person and tending the earth together again. We have missed seeing our dedicated supporters (old and new) in person.

We'll be removing invasive plants around the Junior Land Stewards plots, and some additional spots. Meet at the Smith Field ballparks at the end of Wavecrest Road in Half Moon Bay. Wear layers, sturdy shoes, and sun protection. All ages welcome and encouraged. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Celebrating the earth with Jo Chamberlain

Last Wednesday Jo Chamberlain, Executive Director here at the Coastside Land Trust, visited the Sea Crest school to share in the celebration of their Coast Week. Jo shared a story, and joined students as they created chalk art to show what they love about the nature on the coast around them. The Junior Kindergarten students illustrated a book featuring the flowers they had drawn from their nature study in Marine Science to thank Jo for all of the ways she continues to help protect our coast.

Coastside Land Trust Demonstration Garden

If you are in town and looking for a bit of an education on some of our local plants, come check out the Coastside Land Trust demonstration garden. It is located outside our office at 788 Main Street. Here you will see some some Blue Eyed Grass Sisyrinchium bellum, California Buckwheat Eriogonum fasciculatum, and Sea Thrift Armeria maritima - to name a few. Please don’t mind the California Poppy Eschscholzia californica trying to steal the show. It IS beautiful, so can you blame it?

The Coastside Land Trust welcomes Sara Polgar back to the board of directors

We are excited to announce that Sara Polgar rejoined the Coastside Land Trust board of directors in March. Sara lives on the coast with her husband Ayad and son Emil. Previously, Sara served as a Half Moon Bay Planning Commissioner and was a coastal planner with the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission. Sara holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in biology and a master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management from the Bren School at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

We are all grateful for the leadership and vision that Sara brings to the Coastside Land Trust and to the community.

Thanks to the Abundant Grace Coastside Worker Program

The Coastside Land Trust wishes to share our immense gratitude for the Abundant Grace Coastside Worker program. Abundant Grace engages people experiencing homelessness, and these workers have been cleaning our coastal trail. Their monthly Wavecrest cleanups have removed thousands of pounds of trash from our shared open spaces. Here are only a few photos of what they have removed from the Wavecrest Open Space. Thank you to all who make this happen.

In Memorial of Ryan Popple

The Coastside Land Trust is deeply grateful to all those who have honored the life of Ryan Popple and his passion for the environment and the Half Moon Bay Coastside by supporting the extension of his favorite Wavecrest Open Space Trail in Half Moon Bay along the Pacific coast. All of these generous memorial donations will fund a Wavecrest trail extension and a dedicated overlook in honor of Ryan and his family. This trail will extend and enhance the access and enjoyment into our beautiful shared open space for present and future generations to come.

Generosity Blooms for the Junior Land Stewards

Thanks to Lynn from Half Moon Flowers, the Junior Land Stewards got to take part in their class flower dissections and learn all about the structure and functions of a flower. Lynn continues to be a generous flower donor to the JLS program, and we are thankful to her for it! Haley Peterson, JLS program manager is pretty happy amidst all of those blooms. Here are a few pics of the kids in action…
